question 7

Q7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

For the AS media preliminary task we were asked to produce a front cover and also a contents page for a college student magazine.

for my front cover of my college magazine I created a mind map of ideas that I would focus on when producing my work, I thought of the use of colours and photographs what locations I would take be taking the photographs at, what content I would include and a name for the magazine

when shooting the cover photo I thought about using the 'rule of thirds' and were the location would be so I took the photos in front of the college sign, which was at the front of the college, to show what the magazine was about and what would be included. But on my student magazine I didn't think about any of the main conventions of the magazine and so I made no edits to it and just imbedded it onto the cover. but after realising this on my music magazine cover photo I focused more on how it would apply to the codes and conventions of magazines and my chosen genre. The differences from my college magazine photo to the one on my music magazine will be the fact my music magazine cover photo is more close up it has been edited so that it is black and white and applies to the conventions of the magazine. on my front cover photo of both magazines I used mise-en-scene to help show the genre of the magazine for example on my college magazine I used props such as note books because I felt as though these would help show what the magazine was about and help show how it targeted the students, where as on my music magazine I had my model smoking a fag as the rock genre are more rebels so this showed the social group perfectly.

on my college magazine the design of it was very rushed and was not planed out very well, the texts and puffs and plugs came out very plane and didn't really look appealing, were as on my music magazine I made a flat plan on how it was going to be lade out, I followed the flat plan and once I looked at the finale out come of the draft I then changed text fonts and moved them around the screen, and instead of just using a plane text I edited mine by adding drop shadows and so on.

to conclude I feel as though I have learnt perspective of what a magazine looks like and how to follow the codes and conventions produced in different genres. I also feel as though I learnt that just changing small parts to a piece of text or an image on my front cover can make a huge different when using InDesign to create a product.
