contants page draft 1

here is the start of my contents page. as you can see i have tried to keep colour and i have used the same fonts as on the front page to keep it consistent to the cover photo to the contents to show that the magazine will flow and that i understand why it is good to have consistency through out the magazine. i have added another image of the artist on the contents page not as big as the cover photo but it will be the biggest image on this page to show that the artist is the highlight of this issue of magazine. the black box at the bottom of the page will be a information bar about the magazine. i have chosen to do this because as i have been looking at other magazines such as karreng, in which i have looked at as a similar genre, tend to have more information in a separate box at the bottom of the page.

This is what i have compleated on my front cover this lesson i have changed my masthead so it stands out more, made my cover lines less wordy and also added some poster slots at the bottem along with a bar code and date.

Thursday, 5 December 2013

Here i have worked more on my cover lines looking at old magazine covers and applying some ideas to my own. i have changed the red to a brighter red so it stands out more and makes it easier to read, i also changed the font so it did't look to much of the same and made it bigger.

my second draft for my front cover of the magazine.

here i have made improvements on the font size of the mast head and changed the effects to make it stand out more like it is piercing. i also came up with a cover line and changed the effects of it to suit the genre of the magazine.

my first draft for my front cover of my music magazine.

here is my first draft for my magazine front cover as you can see i am concentrating on the masthead and what font i will be using and the effects to help suit the genre of my magazine. for example for this masthead i have used the font bank gothic (light) as it suits the genre of my magazine which is indie rock, with a drop shadow and an inner glow. my chosen title for my magazine piercing helps describe the genre in one word it helps it stand out.

some improvements i could make are to change some of the effects around and make my font bigger. i want the effect of the name to be striking and piercing like the name.

Initial ideas

Here I have mind mapped my initial ideas for my front cover of my music magazine.

My proposal for music magazine.

proposal for my music magazine.

Genre- rock indie
My target audience is the youth teenagers and young adults age ranging between 16-24. I feel that this age range is perfect for the style of music and who is more likely to buy the magazine. I am also aiming this magazine at both genders as they can both like rock and indie music.

I am wanting to put an image of a band on the front cover of my photo as this instantly will tell you that it is an indie rock magazine. I will go about getting this photo by asking some friends to dress up for me in an indie rock look grab a guitar put them outside somewhere possibly down the beach and take photos.

My magazine will be about the music with interviews of band members and talk about why they wrote there songs and introducing new singers as well as advertising old. there will be posters of the artists or band of the week and a collection of guitar picks every now and then. my magazine will be about the music and not the gossip.

Some cover lines I will put on my magazine will be- interview with Paramore, and some puffs and plugs  on free tickets to concerts or how to win a recording studio for the day.

The title I have decided to call my magazine is piercing as this really describes the style of the music. it also stands out from other magazine names. there was other magazine titles I came up with such as old is new and future is now (FIN) but they didn't have the power to describe the magazine unlike piercing.

fonts that I am thinking of using are the basic magazine fonts such as serif and sans serif. I was also thinking of using bank gothic as this suits my music magazine well I also tried different fonts such as cracked 1 and black oak std but these did not have the same effect.

my magazine will be published every two weeks and with the four main season dates I will change the design of the cover as well is the colour theme and also when its a spatial action like the magazines anniversary, Halloween, Christmas and Easter.

I will have my magazine as the normal A4 size as it is small enough to fit in there bag or to hold but enough space with in the magazine for text, information and pictures that are still easy to read.

on the contents page I will use another photo of a different artist or singer that will be talked about in the magazine but is not as important to the band on the front of that weeks issue the colours i will use on the contents page will be whites and reds as it doesn't need to be as dark as the front page but still needs to be easily read.

the price of my magazine will be £3.00 as it is affordable to the age range I am selling it at.

my chosen target audience.

My chosen target audience
my chosen target audience is a rock and indie group of people with a age range of 15-25 year olds the youth in other-words and will be multi gender. i chose this as my target audience because a lot of people are into this type of music today and it is very popular so it will be easy to sell.

i have a few different mastheads to what i would call it such as, crushing or piercing, something that would instantly describe or give away my target audience and genre of magazine.

photography uses on a cover photo of a magazine.

photography uses

These two magazines (vanity fair and the source) follow the codes and conventions of magazine designs but on the other hand the photographic images show different.
For example if you look at the cover to vanity fair, wit lady gaga, you can see a clear use of lines and contrast. the lines if you want could say are breaking the rules they all join together and it helps show who lady gaga is as it looks a bit un-natrulistic. as well as the contrast helps make this image look un-natrulistic as it draws you to her face her hair and face are brighter and lighter then the rest of the image giving this as your main focal point. the main focal point of lady gaga face also draws you in as her facial expression is very seductive and hr eyes are looking at you if you were to put the rules of thirds into this picture you will be able to see that lady gaga is directly on the left line of the page with her eyes on the third line at the top crossing over drawing you in.

Now if you are to look at this second magazine again, the source, you can see the same use of lines and contrast and also the rule of thirds for at first you are drawn to his face which is scrunched up then by using lines your eyes then change focus point towards the gun as the lines of the person and of the white straps on his top (contrasting) help move your eyes down the picture. by using the rules of thirds you can say that his eyes are on the third row centre but were he does not give eye-contatatct it courses the viewer to change focus point.

to conclude both photographs are very strong and attract the audience and hold there focal point to at lest look at the front cover for 15 seconds before wanting to buy and read the magazine.

how mastheads attract there target audience.

i have chosen a group of mastheads from different types of magazines. all mast heads differ from the other as they are attracting a different type of audience. from different representations of genre of music.

BEATZ is an urban based magazine. it focuses on the youth of our generation, targeting to the music in the charts. The masthead is plane and stands out towards the audience the name is simple and easy to read and tells you instantly of the kind of music expressed and spoken about inside. The colours used of red white and black draw the audience in the colour red attracts the audiences               eye the writing being in black and white makes it easy to read after it catches there eye. the bold text makes it easy to read with in a second instead of fancy writing causing the audience not to look by not knowing what the magazine is about the masthead is important to the magazine as it will tell you what it is about for example this one is called BEATZ MAGAZINE so you know strait away that it is a music magazine and that it is modern music, urban. the target audience will not look at this magazine and think it is for a classical magazine.

KERRANG! is a rock magazine. the target audience for this magazine is for people aged 14-26, as this is such a wide viraty of ages within its music. KERRANG tends to focus on rock music as well as metal and heavy rock. music advertised with in this music magazine tends to have a different age range on them as some bands are newer then others for example bring me the horizon is younger then Marilyn Manson but both are liked by different age groups. the look of the masthead appeals to there target audience as the writing is broken like it is shattered from the force of the rock music it has smashed the title like it would do to glass it is very stereo typical. And also the word KERRANG sounds like a guitar being plugged in to an amp the sound it makes relates to the title so the title gives a clear example of what the magazine is about.

NME (new music express) represents the rock and indie side to music. It is a best selling magazine and is easily recognisable. NME is for many different ages ruffly 16 and up as it includes more details about the music world then others. the masthead is very basic and does not help convey what the magazine is unless you know what NME stands for which is new music express but on the other hand if you know what it stands for the basic, bold short masthead it has been given can be easy to spot on a shelf as the letters stand out more then others.  NME is very similar to the magazine Q as they sell the same Intel on music and contain the same genre. if i were to look in the shop Q magazine would stand out more to me rather then NME as it is bolder and the use of the colour red draws you in as it is an attractive colour were as in NME the title is just on top of the cover picture which can sometime hide the name then having it on a bold bright background.

CLASSIC FM. this magazine has a completely different genre and different target audience to the once above this is more to the older generation in there late forties onwards. the title appeal to there target audience as it is not as bold as the other texts it is more sophisticated and shows what it is trying to sell.

from looking at these magazine titles i have found that most try to attract the younger generation, the youth as they are more likely to buy them so when i come to making my magazine it will be targeted at 16 years and over.

music genre mind map research

finale designs.

here are my finale magazine designs drafts for my front cover and contents page i used indesign to produce these pages and for my finale magazine cover and contents page of my music magazine i will be using the same process. as you can see i have showed my understanding of attracting the target audience and using Cretan magazine techniques. for example i have gave the magazine a mast head and plugs and puffs i used images to help drew people in and others.

evaluation

here some photos i took but did not use.

practice contents page

this is my contents page.
here i have created my contents page for my practice magazine using in design i have used the same colours as my front cover as in greens and blues but i could of made it more interesting by adding some puffs and plugs and some other colours i would choose white if so. i also used the same text fonts as i did on the cover page.

practice magazine cover page.

here is my practice magazine cover i have created using in design.
for this cover page of a college magazine i went out around the college and took pictures of my two friends in different places to try and get the idea across that the collage is a happy place to be in for learning and that they are happy to study here as well. on my cover page i wanted to show that this was associated with southdown's college so i used the southdown's colours of blue, greens and white. And also as you can see i used puffs and plugs to try and draw the target audience in with give aways of what current students may want or need. To improve my cover i could use less of the colours or have some more draw your eyes into the magazine colours such as reds. apart from this i believe my cover page is good.

here is my flat plan for my contents page.

IPC case study
what types of magazine and target audiences has IPC been associated with over the years?

the IPC has been associated over the years with many different magazines from the 1800 it has been associated with-
-horse and hound
-shooting times
-yachting world
-amateur gardening
-cycling weekly
-amateur photographer
-the railway magazine
the target audience for these magazines in the 1800's would have been widely read by middle age men with the interest in sports, cultural interest and photography. from this it shows us that the IPC targeted middle classed men the reason being is because these magazines are all associated around men and middle class because sports and the other things these magazines are listed above are meant to be viewed by wealthier men then others.

in the new century there were some different titles that then became associated with IPC in the 1900's to the 1960's such as-
-yachting monthly
-motor boat
-woman's weekly
-golf monthly
-woman & home
-woman's own
-woman
-Angler's mail
the IPC has continued to target people with the intrest with in sport as you can see with the magazines yachting monthly, motor boat, Angler's and golf monthly. but as you can also see the IPC has chosen to target woman aswell with there magazines such as woman's weekly, woman &home, woman's own and woman.

from the 1970's to the 2000 IPC associated with more magazines such as-
-sporting gun
-motor caravan
-wedding homes
-country homes & interiors
-classic boats
-motor boats monthly
-practical painting
-bird keeper
from these new magazines you can see that IPC has continued there target audience around middle aged men and woman but have increased the amount of magazine titles.

why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?
the IPC would be an appropriate publisher because over the years as you can see it has targeted many different types of magazines for example you can see that they have targeted man and woman in there magazines such as 'woman's own' and m'motor caravan' so from this the IPC shows they can target different types of audience easily and will be able to make a new music magazine and have success from it.

what sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish?
if the IPC were to publish a music magazine it would most likely be an old style music magazine with all the old rock songs party songs and possibly classical but i think it will have artists like 'queen' and 'ABBA' published inside as the IPC haven't had a high persentge of magazine sails and this genre of music will be easily published to the age range they usually publish to.

why might other publishers like Bauer be appropriate?
Bauer would also be an appropriate publisher as this also shows that it has a history in selling magazines back dating into the 1875's selling over 38 million magazines weekly showing that they have experience in selling there magazines and know how to attract to there target audience. Bauer publishes different types of magazines such as 'FHM, heat and grazia'. the magazine heat target audience is working class woman with an interest in gossip celebrity gossip and how to look good were as FHM is targeted at middle aged men and young men Grazia on the other hand is an Italian magazine and has a slimier target audience to heat. now these magazine are all on high demand and this shows that Bauer is an appropriate publisher because it shows us that they know how to lead there target audience in and buy the magazine.

How do magazines appeal to there target audience?

how do magazine's appeal to there target audience?
for this i will be talking about the target audience for the magazine kerrang and how they appeal this.
this magazine is directed at a particular type of target audience that have a certain interest in old metal new metal and rock music. this magazine age rage's between 14-25 year old and sometimes older. the magazine attempts to appeal to this particular group by using features on there front cover to draw them in. such as they use puffs and plugs to advertise things with in the article for example on the magazine above it uses a puff and plug with a black circle witch represents the theme of the magazine and in bold capital letter writing says, THE UK'S BIGGEST... and so on.The name placing on the magazine is half clear so they all know what it is. a famous celebrate that relates to the type of music on the front with bold sans serif writing in front introducing the artist and giving you a glimpse of what is inside the article.
the colours of the blacks and the red can help appeal to the kind of music type. The layout is also used to help attract the audience. It uses photos to help draw in the audience as they are going to be used in the articles making people want to read them. This magazine is relatively cheap so people can afford it helping to make this magazine be attractive to the target audience as young age teenagers will not have a lot of money to go spending lots on to a magazine.

to what extent should magazines be held responsible for social ramifications of the representations they offer?

To what extent should magazines be held responsible for the social ramifications of the representations they offer?

there are carton magazines specifically aimed at teenage girl and appeal to them in carton ways. such as magazines like, Cosmo girl, bliss, shout, sugar and teen vogue. here are what there covers look like. these magazines all take a huge effect on teenage girls. all the covers have a celebrity on front that could be an idle to one of the readers, and also they extent of fashion sexual looks and free give aways that can make you feel insecure.

these magaiznes influence teenage girls in a bad way. making them grow up to quick wearing to much makeup going out drinking and being to sexualised. but is it completely the magazines and media's fault. in teen magazine such as the once above they are partly to blame for the way teen age girls are represented for example on the covers of teenage magazine they show very famous celebrity maybe the idol of teenage girls or a teen age celebrity crush on the cover but are placed in either a sexualised pose or in shouts case on the one above not very much clothing. and girls would want to be like there idle or act in a way they believe someone like "Justin Beiber" will like. magazines that are produced in aim at young teenagers fail to uphold there guidelines they are meant to follow in effect creates sexualisation within young teenagers. for though there are other forms of media that effect this magazines can be one of the worst as they don't have an age range of how old you have to buy them and they are not checked to see if they are right to be sold to these young children. the magazines add advertisement on make  up giving away "free" makeup having a harmful influence on teenage girls, making them feel insecure about themselves.

I started to look into other examples of ways that teen magazines are responsible for the social ramification of the representations they offer and came across the article

"Teen magazines are sexualising readers, says watchdog"

in this article it explains how there are girls as young as eleven years of age and they are reading this magazine. with sexual content inside and others such as pictures of naked mean question ares to see if you are gay and so on. these magazines have no age limit and parents can look at the cover and see that its a teen magazine thinking it will do no harm without actually looking at the content within the magazine. for although these magazines show this content they are also useful and are good for girls because if there is something they are worried about they can email in anomalously to get help from it.

there has been other articles that agree with this one and the sexualising of young girls like this one i found doing my own research.
"How do magazines affect body image"
this article shows the statistics in which 70% of teenage girls that magazines influence in an ideal body image, lowering there self a stem. and it also that teenage boys are affected by this as well as girls. from reading this article i linked it to the last article as the way a celebrity or someone in these magazines look and how "sexy" they are and girls wanting to look like them but becoming depressed and anxious when they don't.

in conclusion i believe that magazines hold a huge responsibility to the representations they offer to teenage girls and i think that the huge amount of sexual facts and images should be taken out from these magazines and more things that you would imagine a teenage girl should be like not wanting to be sexy.
